Mech Combat by Usagisama Mech Combat by Usagisama
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD: FULL VIEW PLEASE (really, there is no point trying to view it as a thumb)

A concept picture for my Manga Mech Pilot Laika... heh, well, hopefully a manga I'll get around to sooner or later ^^; It started as a concept pic, but decided it would make a sweet wallpaper...

There are some things I really like about this pic, I like a lot of the little details in the backdrop, and I think the mech design itself looks really cool, and will work great for the comic. But the picture as a whole was very much constructed in parts (mech and city were drawn separately, and it shows). I think this picture really lacks an over all composition, it feels a little cluttered too. Whatever, the mech is sweet and it's killing stuff so I should be happy! :D

Comments always apreciated!

Done in Photoshop CS with a WACOM 12x12 tablet over 6+ hours (too long :XD: )

Didn't read the other comments, so maybe it's been said already, but I think the left arm should be a little more animated... if that makes sense.

For a Mechwarrior style machine, it'd be ok, but this is very much anime-style, and those mecha are generally more animated. If it was like, I dunno, thrown out to the side or something, maybe.... I don't know, I'm not an artist, but it just looks so static.

Stilted or general lack of dynamic feel is a trait that haunts many of my images. Its definitely one of the areas I need to work on. Must... improve!! Thanks for the comment! :)

You know what might help? Go out and buy yourself a couple Gundam or Armored core models, or something similar, something that will hold a pose and has good articulation, and if it comes with a stand, even better. Having a model usually helps to get poses right, and it gives you something you can play around with before you start drawing.

I actually have a few (an eva and a gasaraki suit), I just haven't utilized them ^^; Well, for my next drawing I will! :D

cool...looks a bit like a villain tho, as it's very dark in colour AND has no face to speak of. Of course I know nothing about the character, but it doesn;t look to me like a "hero" design.

Yeah, it definitely looks pretty cold/evil ish. That's sort of what I'm going for though. Both sides in the comic are kind of evil... they both have selfish/bad motivations for war. The comic is gonna focus on the positive relationships the pilots have with each other while being entangled in doing things they later question/feel guilty about.

Though I am a huge mecha fan, I hate to say that in this case it the background that draws my attention. The mech is a nice design but I'd love to know how you accomplished that background : )

Heh, I hate to say it, but I get that comment a lot ^^; I guess I'm a landscape artist who refuses to give up drawing figures and mechs in those landscapes!! LOL! :XD:

As for the process in creating the background city, well, it's kinda hard to explain but I'll try my best. :)

I start with a layer on which I draw my construction lines. I draw the horizon lines, vanishing pints, and the lines of perspective. Then, on another layer I draw a sketch over those construction lines, this sketch ads more details to the forms made with the perspective lines. I draw in windows, street lamps, cars, and what ever else I want in the BG.

Then I went over that sketch with another cleaner sketch! :XD: (Dif layer of course) I then hide all the other layers (construction lines and rough sketch) I then make a new layer UNDER the sketch layer. On which I start blocking in color, gray for one building, green for grass, a darker gray for asphalt and so on. I then make new layers over the color layer, but under the line layer still, on which I apply shadow. I just paint with black, but reduce the layer opacity so it lets some of the background color through.

For the windows and streetlights I make a new layer that goes over everything, the color layer, the shadow one, and even the sketch! I use colors for these light-emitting elements that are much lighter than ANY of the background ones. This contrast is important to get that “glowing” effect.

When I am pleased with the look of everything, I flatten the image, then use various masks and selections to selectively blur parts of the cityscape. Things that are further away I blur the most, things closer to the object of focus are blurred less.

Ok, sorry for writing a book!! ^^; It’s really long, but I still left a lot out. One of these days, I’m just gonna make a proper illustrated tutorial!

No problem writing a book! I'm very impressed that you actually took the time to respond in great detail. Thank you :) The only thing better would be a tutorial, and with your skill I'd definately recomend it. Don't give up the figures or mecha, your people drawing skills are beyond my capeabilities and if you saw some of my earlier mecha... well, best not go there XD

Thank you! :) I love all things mecha... but I still have a long way to go when it comes to drawing it. Cause it’s still really hard for me to draw machines that look cool AND realistic (as in it looks like it can move properly). Must practice more!! *shakes fist with determination* :D

PREPARE FOR AMAZING ASSKICK

Rocking BG, of course. I do find that mr mech is a tad small for the frame, it just feels like it should overpower me until i cry myself to sleep a bit more. :) quality though. Keep it up!

tonights forcast:

incoming mechs from the north-east with scattered shelling over the greater metropolitan area overnight. residents are advised to bring a haz-suit with them in the morning, as the fallout is expected to continue until noon. Increasing mech cover with continued shelling over the next few days, clearing up by the weekend.

Mmmm, happy memories of AC3. Running, blowing stuff up, getting my arse handed to me on a platter by Midget....
That is fully awsome, so much detail in the background, and cool shadow effects off the thrusters. Top stuff as per usual. Definately a fav.
Soooo, does it have an overboost? ;)

Oh man, I love Armored Core! Easily one of my all time favorite games!! :D I mean, it's like legos, only for mechs... and you blow stuff up too! I have only played the old ones though (for original playstation, I don't have a PS2). The style of mechs in that game are clearly a strong influence on the mechs I draw.

Thanks for the fav too! It's greatly appreciated, oh, and it totally can over boost! :D

I shall threaten you with a rolled up newspaper, for drawing one of those buildings along would take me a couple hrs just to get right, and the mech would take ages! If I end up coloring a piece, it takes me at the very least 6hrs (and sometimes over 20 hours if I really get into doing a background) but I guess that's what happens when you use traditional media instead of a computer. I think that looks friggin' cool, like it could be a screen shot from an anime. The perspective issues could be worked on, but it's not so bad that it jumps right out at you and looks really odd. I need to draw more, I'm getting behind, and everyone knows the industry is about competition.

Heh, yeah, the perspective was all free handed and sketched, so it's not perfect... and the digital media is a time saver, but only sort of. Digital line work takes a lot longer than traditional pencil/ink. But coloration and shading is WAY faster on computer than traditional means.

The best of all worlds would be to hand ink a pic, scan it, and digitally color it (but I don't have a scanner ^^; )

Anyway, glad ya liked it, and thanks for the comment! :)
